The great torii gate of Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine is one of the largest stone torii gates in Japan, with a total height of 9.8 meters and a top eagle measuring 12 meters wide. This torii gate was damaged in the Northern Osaka earthquake, resulting in a crack in the lower part of the pillar stone on the right side of the front gate.
Based on the strong desire of the chief priest to preserve the existing great torii gate, which is a symbol of Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine, a highly aesthetically pleasing design was adopted that made use of the existing stone while strengthening its earthquake resistance. The pillar stone was surrounded by concrete, and a granite pillar stone was installed, and instead of the traditional manju-shaped pillar stone, the shape was changed to an octagonal straw base. By incorporating traditional architectural techniques and modern sensibilities, the stone torii gate was redesigned with a unique design.
