Sangatsudo Lantern
- Stone Lantern
- Tall Lantern
The original lantern can be seen in the Hokke-do (Sangatsu-do) of Todaiji Temple and is recorded to have been made in the sixth year of the Kencho era by a stonemason named Inoyukisue. Inoyukisue, who came from Song China to help rebuild the Todaiji Temple, is also known for making the thirteen-story pagodas of Okura-ji Temple and Hannya-ji Temple. The lantern’s shape and decorations are considered flawless and have been sampled through generations since the Edo period. The jewel is turnip-shaped and sits on a lotus flower base, the umbrella is carved with fern handles, and the base is hexagonal.
