The Kimon refers to the northeast direction and is traditionally considered an unlucky or inauspicious direction through which evil spirits are believed to enter. The stone is carved with the face of an Oni (demon) specifically to block the gate and repel evil. It is believed to possess protective power that wards off misfortune and shields the surrounding area from negative energy.
